So, today I put my new Dutch Army DPM tent up in the garden as a test run. Generally speaking, it's about right for military surplus, i.e. it's been used.

The good bits: The fabric and groundsheet are good, I like some of the tent features, it has a pocket inside, vents at the top of each door that can be opened or closed and are shut by velcro, and once you get it pegged and guyed out properly it's a nice little tent. I wouldn't try and fit two people in it though.

The disappointing bits. There's no stakes/pegs with it, which is annoying, especially as the webpage clearly lists it as coming with pegs and poles. I've borrowed the pegs from my Hungarian Lavvu for the pictures. There are a few guys missing too, although not a big deal. The inside of the tent does LOOK mouldy. I am not sure if this is mould, maybe, maybe not, so I'm airing it in the sun and have some fabsil cleaner and proofer ready to go!

These tents are great but for more specific purposes. They are oldschool heavy military tents and definitely not for a lightweight hike such as modern lightweight hiking specific tents, you could use one but it's a huge weight in comparison and one which most hikers wouldn't desire to lug up and down hills as well as their pack load. BUT, if you are expecting some serious weather and your prepared to carry to your pitch location and set up camp for a longer period than an overnighter then these tents come into their own, tough, super sturdy when pitched well (which is pretty easy) and the deep and thick flooring groundsheet make these ideal for more extreme conditions! That said, they're single skinned so for extra warmth a good bedding setup and heating source would be essential for the aforementioned nasty weather. Another thing to note is that although there's plenty of headroom at the apex, these tents are rather narrow making them (with kit) more appropriate as a single full sized adult person tent, two people in this tent is workable but would be a very cosy arrangement! Already knowing this, i bought two of these as they zip together easily and have doors both sides meaning that zipped together you can essentally make one tent that has a zippable sleeping area and a separate equally spacious vestibule area for "stuff" and for sitting in to organise that "stuff" before heading out of the tent for excursions or firewood etc etc. Of course, linking two together would more easily support two people! I bought the grade 1 tents via goarmy ebay store and the quality is superb, delivery was fast and each tent came with all the poles, the attached guy lines in great condition and also the pegs/steaks, all within their own canvas pouch. Easy enough to set up, join together and pack down into the larger canvas bag. Dutch woodland camo, virtually identical to British army woodland DPM and this pattern seems a refreshing return from the modern MTP or BTP designs. Designed to put up with a lot of military abusive usage and the quality of these now very old tents clearly reflects this! Brilliant tents that I'm sure will continue to put up with any tough challenges to come. The only thing to make sure of if your planning to use these tents, is to make sure your prepared to carry their weight as well as being prepared with regards to your other camping equipment if your planning a more extreme camping mission into more remote areas with regular and challenging weather. For a campsite, no real problem, stash your things in the car and then there's plenty of camping living space (per person, per tent)

Been considering one of these for a while and I wasn't disappointed. Pegs and poles all present and it's in great condition. Given a coat of Fabsil Gold and a good airing and it was ready for its first outing. Quick and easy to pitch and tons of room for one person and kit. Blends in perfect in woodland which was my main reason for buying one. No problem with water leaks the zip ends. Check out Jim-Bobs Adventures and Kit on You Tube on how to set the tent up 👍. Arrived quickly and in expected condition. Tested tent with hose and in rain, let in water at expected places. Made a couple of mods, Flap over vertical zip to just above velcro pole strap. (Done with an ordinary hand crank singer sewing machine). Also hand sewn zip tape to canvas in corners to block other potential leak points. Now just waiting for some inclement weather to test.

Delivered today, and set up in 20 minutes, looks good, with no obvious marks or damage. Smells, ok, I've seen some videos where it's mentioned. Didn't come with pegs/stakes but no drama as i have some spares. I will Fabsil to make sure it's waterproof. Overall, I am very happy, with a great price and quick delivery. My first Goarmy purchase will be using them again.

Easy to set up. Lots of room inside. I’ve slept in it twice so far only had it 3 weeks. I like the so called bath tub as it’s a big barrier to the wet ground. You have to make sure the end of the zipper is outside the tent. If they are facing inside you can get rain running down them. Very pleased with it.

Missing parts

For the 2nd time, next day delivery actually means 5 days. Plus I'm missing pegs. There's also only one toggle for the doors. I'll be taking my business elsewhere

I'll cut to the chase: Youtube will give you all you need to know about these. The rest is up to you and what you need it for. It's good for what I want it for, and that's not ultralight backpacking.

This particular tent came with one missing guying cord and its tensioner, which is not a problem, very easily replaced. It was pretty dusty, had a few leaves and some sand in it, and smelt of being in storage. Spraying Febreze inside helped a lot with the pong. Gave it a clean, at the same time testing the fabric for waterproofing. Some places the water ran off, mostly it wetted the canvas, so I've been to the shop whose name almost rhymes with Alford for a couple of tins of Fabsil Gold. When that's been applied I will use it for simple overnighters in the woods, I think the heavy tub type built in groundsheet will fare well under my boots.

Incidentally, there's been some complaints on t'interweb about mould in these tents. There are a lot of dark spots inside this one too, but IMHO it's not mould. I think folks might be worried when they see them, especially with the strong smell when first unpacking, but I think it's the brown dye part of the camo print soaked through to the inside. If it was mould it would be everywhere, behind the other colours too, but it's not, it's only where the darkest print is. Hope that puts some people's mind at rest, except if you really do have a mouldy one of course. Sorry about that.

Basic tent in great condition

I am very happy with this purchase. Tent itself in great condition and arrived with everything needed (pegs etc?).
Can't use it with my camp bed but fine with an inflatable mattress. Would be pretty snug for 2 but isn't that always the way with tent sizing.

Heavy - but worth it

Weighs a ton - OK, 7kgs - but it's worth it. Also it's a 2-man, but I love this tent so much I sometimes lug it along in my rucksack solo, (not too far), and sleep like a baby. Nukeproof, bombproof, weatherproof etc etc, really nice design, the groundsheet is the thickest you'll ever see, if you're camping in the woods you can sleep with the side open and a thick blanket over your sleeping bag, you can go down to 5C or lower like this, fab tent all round

Brilliant... loads of space and really easy to put up

I got it for a canoeing and wild camping trip and it really worked a treat for my wife and I. Not as big as it looks on the screen, which is great as we didn't want anything too big. Great condition and quality; and, so easy to put up and take down. It's going to last for ever too... I would certainly recommend this tent.
