British Army DPM Desert Windproof Smock Field Jacket

Having found the most useful jacket I ever acquired to be my 80s DPM Arctic smock, thanks to a Royal Marine I once worked with, I wanted something similar but didn't want to spend big money or appear Walt-like. I looked at loads of jackets & smocks before deciding on this one - you can spend big bucks on the latest Gucci versions. Ironically a US YouTuber did the most helpful review of this version, which showed it had all the features I wanted with none I didn't.

CONDITION: It's clearly been issued & used, but there's no wear & tear so having taken off the Second Fusiliers arm badges, & the sniper tape showing said fusilier's blood type inside the top pocket, one wash cycle got rid of the faint QM stores smell. (But not the sniper tape residue - isopropanol should fix that - or some sort of small resin splash that's permanently soaked in. No biggie.)

DESIGN: I would agree that it has four bellows pockets, two concealed chest pockets & mine has the tiny left arm pocket (I guess FFDs are old technology as an Elastoplast is all that would fit in there.) but usefully mine also has three pen slots inside each zippered chest pocket. As I no longer need to give & take orders or mark up my map, space for 6 pens is overkill, so I've just this moment ripped out the dividing stitching rows from one so my (small) smart phone fits in nicely preventing it rattling around in the cavernous zippered chest pockets. It also has a handy row of securing loops inside each chest bellows pockets. (I've attached a photo which shows all this.) I don't think that this jacket is "double lined...ripstop" - at least not the type that has a visible mesh in the weave, which I don't like. This is a smooth fabric, which is exactly what I wanted & also is as per the photos on the website. It's mostly single lined apart from the upper back & chest, which is all as I would expect & wanted.

PERFORMANCE: I've worn it several times now & for those that may not know what to expect, it kept off the wind chill, dried quickly after a shower, the hood kept my hearing aids dry without impeding my vision thanks to the wiring and the sleeves roll up so I can do the washing up without getting them wet. As I live on a beach these days I am now nicely camouflaged & don't look like a tourist - it perfectly fits my requirements.

SIZING: I'm 5'11" & 76kg. I ordered L|Reg - 180/96 & this is the perfect fit for me. It is baggy enough to wear a thick fleece underneath & long enough that I don't get a cold wet arse.

SUPPLY: Ordering & delivery was smooth & reasonably priced with confirmation emails along the way, so I'd thoroughly recommend GoArmy.

Excellent quality and exceptionally well made, these supergrade jackets are the bees knees so it's understandable that they fly off the shelves!

That said, mine seemed on the large side so think that they are sized assuming wearer will already have multiple layers on already? - will return the jacket but my loss will be somebody else's gain and I'll keep an eye for when these return to stock

Fabulous jacket! It is loads of pockets just what I needed. Quick delivery and exactly as described. I use GoArmy a lot now for my outdoor gear. As an angler I spend a lot of time outdoors.

Jacket was top quality and brand new. Sadly, far too big for me, I imagine made to fit over a soldiers other gear. Highly recommended!

Excellent jacket arrived very quickly and in perfect condition, didn't appear to have ever been issued. Great shop to deal with, I've bought a few items over the years. They don't always have a huge range but it's always good quality and well priced, just like the windproof smock.

The quality of this jacket for the price is just phenomenal! It looks like it hasn’t been worn, fit is a little larger than the guide but if wearing items underneath (as I intend to be) then it’s perfect.

Looked brand new. For me the size fit (despite being my exact measurements of 180H / 96Chest) too far big so had to return it. However it is a quality item with strong fabric, robust zip, heavy duty button fixings over deep pockets. It is longish, coming to mid-thigh on me but clearly designed to be worn over closer-fitting uniform items and to protect in sandstorms. There is no regular collar as such - the hood is folded and acts as a collar until fully deployed. It has a strong internal wire along the front edge which, when the hood is up, can be folded down each side of the head and closed almost together at the front to create a narrow visibility slit - the hood is also deep and can be pulled foward from the face and closed which is useful in sandstorms. Overall a very well-made bit of kit. I was looking for a summer/warm-weather hiking outerwear layer with storage for map and other personal kit.

These smocks are superb, in fantastic condition and for such a low price you'd be daft not to get one . Tons of pocket's to hold all sorts of essentials and lightweight too, work's well in a layering system too. Really fast delivery as always and great customer service, all what I've come to expect from this great store.

No sign of fabric wear, just some vague staining on the forearms and retains its water repellency. A ton of pocket space and easy to tailor with the drawstring waist and hem.
Mine had no metal framing in the hood but that's no big deal.

My smock seems brand new, the hood and the metal framing is very good for various weather conditions, kind of reminded of the head gear of the Russian gorka suit. Great quality, mint condition
