Upcycling clothing/equipment is the method of taking pre-used products and transforming them into repurposed items. Reused clothing and recycled clothing, upcyled garments are becoming increasingly popular in the contemporary era of sustainability.
There are many environmental benefits to using upcycled items. Upcycled clothing/equipment uses significantly fewer raw materials, reducing the harmful impacts of continuous production.
Less water usage, fewer chemicals and carbon emissions and avoiding contributing to landfill sites, upcycled clothing/equipment exists in stark contrast to the likes of one-season usage from the bigger brands. A key feature of using this kind of clothing/equipment is the affordable price point, which makes it easier for conscious consumers to shop ethically.
Army/Military surplus are goods, that are sold or otherwise disposed of when no longer needed by the military. Usually goods sold by the military are clothing, equipment, and tools of a nature that is generally useful to the civilian population, as well as embroidered patches, name tags, and other items that can be used for a faux military uniform. Occasionally, vehicles (jeeps, trucks, etc.) will be sold as well.
The demand for such items comes from various people like collectors, outdoorsmen, adventurers, hunters, survivalists, and players of airsoft and paintball, as well as others seeking high quality, sturdy, military issue garb. A good number of these goods sold on the open market may be used, or even new.
Most items sold in military surplus stores in the United States and other parts of the World are deemed "military grade". This designation refers to meeting a relevant Military Standard for operational use.
The history of army surplus in the United States dates back to the American Civil War. This was the first large American war that required the proper wearing of military uniforms for many of the soldiers. In earlier wars, most troops were basically a militia wearing whatever they had with them. The civil war required mass-produced clothing and equipment for both sides. After the war, to recoup some of the money they sold the supplies in stores. Thus the military surplus store was born.
