Handmade Afghan War Rug – A Piece of History Woven in Wool
Afghan war rugs emerged in the late 20th century, particularly following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Drawing on centuries of traditional carpet-weaving, Afghan artisans began replacing familiar floral and geometric patterns with a rather more modern collection of motifs: tanks, Kalashnikovs, helicopters, fighter jets and military maps.
As the conflict evolved, so did the designs, documenting everything from the Soviet withdrawal in 1989 to the American-led invasion in 2001 and the subsequent War on Terror. These rugs are more than unusual decorative pieces; they’re a fascinating record of a country whose turbulent history became woven directly into its traditional crafts.
A striking conversation piece for any military history enthusiast, collector or anyone who fancies something a wee bit different on the wall.
Every rug tells a story, and these ones are anything but ordinary.
