British Army Arctic Sleeping Bag: The Ultimate Cold-Weather Survival Gear

When the temperature drops well below freezing and the wind begins to howl, standard camping gear simply won't cut it. You need a sleep system designed for survival in the harshest environments on Earth. Enter the Genuine British Army Arctic Sleeping Bag. Issued to British forces operating in sub-zero climates like Norway and the Falklands, this military-surplus legend is engineered to keep you warm, safe, and comfortable when conditions turn brutal.

Whether you are an avid bushcrafter, a winter wild camper, or someone prepping an emergency bug-out bag, this heavy-duty sleeping bag is an indestructible investment in outdoor comfort.

Technical Specifications

Built to strict Ministry of Defence (MoD) standards, every component of this bag is optimized for extreme thermal efficiency and rugged durability.

  • Temperature Rating: Comfort down to -3°C (Extreme survival rating down to -8°C or lower when paired with proper sleeping mat and thermal layers).

  • Insulation: High-loft, advanced synthetic hollow-fibre fill (retains warmth even if damp).

  • Outer Material: Heavy-duty, water-resistant, windproof ripstop nylon canvas.

  • Inner Lining: Soft-touch, breathable poly-cotton blend to maximize comfort and reduce condensation.

  • Zip System: Central, heavy-duty crash zip with an insulated, oversized storm baffle.

  • Internal Features: Two large internal mesh pockets for keeping electronics, batteries, or torches warm overnight.

  • Shape: Classic mummy profile with an anatomically tailored hood and drawcord.

A Brief History of the British Army Arctic Bag

The design of the British Army Arctic Sleeping Bag was born out of operational necessity during the Cold War. British troops deployed to NATO's northern flank in Norway required gear capable of withstanding the unforgiving Arctic tundra. Traditional down sleeping bags, while warm, failed catastrophically if they got wet.

The MoD developed this synthetic hollow-fibre system to ensure that even if a soldier climbed into the bag wet, or if condensation built up inside a snow hole, the bag would still trap body heat. Decades later, despite advancements in ultra-light civilian gear, this specific model remains a gold standard among survivalists because of its sheer, unyielding reliability.

Comprehensive Usage Guide

To get the absolute best performance out of your Arctic sleeping bag, follow these professional field tips:

  1. The "Crash" Zip System: The bag features a prominent central zipper designed as a "quick-release" or "crash" zip. In an emergency, you don't want to fumble with side zippers. Simply pull the zip down smoothly from the center of your chest for a rapid exit.

  2. Dress for Success: Do not wear heavy outerwear inside the bag; doing so restricts air circulation. For optimum warmth, wear a clean, dry set of thermal base layers and a woolen beanie.

  3. Protect the Underside: No sleeping bag can insulate you from the cold ground on its own. Always pair this bag with a high-quality, insulated sleeping mat (or a military-issue foam roll mat) to prevent conduction heat loss.

  4. Protect Your Electronics: Sub-zero temperatures destroy battery life. Utilize the built-in internal mesh pockets to store your phone, camera batteries, and headlamp close to your body heat overnight.

Care & Maintenance Guide

Synthetic bags are incredibly tough, but proper care ensures they maintain their loft and thermal properties for decades.

  • Storage: Never store your sleeping bag compressed inside a stuff sack for long periods. This crushes the hollow fibres and creates cold spots. Hang it in a wardrobe or store it loose in a large mesh storage sack.

  • Washing: If the bag gets muddy, allow it to dry and brush the dirt off. For a full clean, use a front-loading commercial washing machine on a gentle, cool cycle (30°C) using a technical fabric cleaner. Do not use standard fabric softeners, as they coat the fibres and reduce breathability.

  • Drying: Tumble dry on the lowest possible heat setting or air-dry flat. Shake the bag periodically during the drying process to restore its natural loft.

Comparison: Military Surplus vs. Commercial Winter Bags

When choosing a winter sleep system, it helps to see how British military engineering stacks up against modern high-street commercial outdoor brands.

Feature British Army Arctic Bag High-Street Commercial Winter Bag
Durability Extreme. Ripstop canvas skin built to handle rocks, boots, and rough terrain. Moderate. Lightweight nylon shells prioritising weight over tear resistance.
Wet-Weather Performance Excellent. Retains loft and continues insulating even when damp. Variable. Down-filled commercial bags clump and lose all warmth if wet.
Zipping System Central heavy-duty emergency crash zip. Standard side-entry fine-tooth zipper (prone to snagging).
Weight & Pack Size Bulkier and heavier (approx. 2.5kg+). Designed for vehicular transport or heavy rucks. Ultralight and highly compressible, but significantly more fragile.
Value for Money Unbeatable. Premium military performance at a fraction of the cost. Expensive. High-end sub-zero civilian bags can cost hundreds of pounds.

Available Grades

Please note that these items are genuine military surplus and may have been previously issued to serving personnel. We grade our stock strictly so you know exactly what you are receiving:

  • Super Grade: Near-new or unissued condition. Show little to no signs of field use, with immaculate fabric and full loft.

  • Grade 1: Previously used by serving personnel. May show light signs of field wear, faint scuff marks, or have names/service numbers written on the labels. They are 100% fully functional, with no tears, and zips are thoroughly checked.

-20 to -35 celsius

I live in northern Sweden and it gets cold here in the winter, from late October to late March we have between -20 to -35 celsius. So cold that your spit freezes to ice before it hits the ground, so camping in these conditions is a bit challenging with a tent and a sleeping bag.
So just the sleeping system weighs almost 10kg.

to be able to sleep comfortably in these temperatures in these icy winds, you need everything in L and XL. In my case, a British Army Modular Winter Sleeping Bag, on the inside of that, a British Army Arctic Sleeping Bag, and on the inside of that, a Fleece Sleeping Bag Liner. And the sleeping system inside a large water and windproof U.S. Style MVP Bivi Bag. And that whole sleeping system, without separating it, goes down into an Austrian 2 Strap Duffle Bag for storage.

I have had similar sleeping systems for over 20 years and they work perfectly in all weathers and seasons, summer and winter, you just take from or add parts as needed. In the middle of summer I only use the Fleece Sleeping Bag Liner and the MVP Bivi Bag, and in the winter, the whole system, allows me to throw the system directly on the ice in blizzards down to -35, zip it up and sleep like a peaceful lamb all night.

This year it was time for a new one. so when I found GOarmy uk with great prices and excellent customer service, I jumped at the chance and bought a whole new set. And everything only cost me 400€ with the shipment, the customs freight and other things. To be honest, this I bought from Goarmy is probably the cheapest system I've ever bought. I bought one 4 years ago, when I gave my son my old system when he was going Scout winter camping. I paid almost €1600 for the new system then. This year my wife wants to go with me and the kids and winter camping and ice fishing in the mountains, so she gets my system, and now I bought this on GOarmy for only 400€. From now on, I will only shop here at GOarmy. Cheap, good quality and super good support.

Thank you GOarmy

This is a comfortable sleeping bag but I was just out camping in England mid February and I was cold. Granted I didn't have a tent just a shelter but lots of layers plus the cotton liner inside. I would use it again just not in the winter, so overall I liked the bag but it doesn't withstand the cold, at least mine didn't

Super refuge

Not for lightweight backpacking but that’s pretty obvious. If space and weight are no issue there is nothing better to dissapear in to and escape the cold and the damp. Got to be oversized like this XL. Only bad thing is having to emerge again and get back to it..

Delighted with the liner and impressed by the fast and efficient delivery. Thank you!

In all round generally great condition, just had to dock a star as one seam had to be stitched up and no cinch cord in hood so had to sort that.
Apart from that in good condition and still consider good value for the price.

I have a micro camper and wanted to upgrade my sleeping bag for the winter. I liked that this one as it was wide and long. I have slept in it a few times now and really like it. The zip is robust and does not snag like my old one did. Plenty of space in the bag and the hood works well to cover my head and ties with a drawstring. The two mesh pockets are large, but stuff sometimes falls out when you turn over. Not a problem for me, as I won’t really need them. I slept at 4 degrees and was warm enough (I did wear long johns though to boost the warmth). The condition of the bag was very good - a little musky smell, but this has gone now the bag has been aired. Delivery was delayed and the box was damaged both the fault of the carrier not goarmy. They despatched quickly. I would recommend this bag and using goarmy to get it.
